Risk Factors By: Calisa Rhose

Calisa Rhose is joining the  AJ Wiliams Blog today to talk about her latest release Risk Factors

Love, like life, is not without risk.
BLURB- Veterinarian Vivian Dane has purchased her uncle’s practice in the tiny town of Wales,
Missouri, where most residents still doubt her ability to treat their pets. But Viv is used to being
considered less-worthy than her predecessors. After all, her parents are world-renowned wildlife
vets, and most everyone is unimpressed she’s chosen to not follow directly in their footsteps.
Now Connor, a patient’s owner, is hot for Viv, but clearly doesn’t think she’s dating material
because he has a daughter…who he believes no woman is good enough for.
Being a perfect dad is EMT paramedic Connor’s life focus. He can’t seem to stay away
from sexy Doctor Viv, but attraction is as far as he’ll ever let it go. His mother abandoned him,
leaving him to be raised in the foster system, and then his wife abandoned both him and their
daughter. He absolutely will not risk bringing another woman into his little girl’s life and having
her feel the hurt of being left…again.
Forfeiting is easier than attempting and failing. So why does Viv feel compelled to prove
she’s a sure bet for Connor and his daughter? Can Connor trust Viv--and himself--enough to play
the possibilities?
LONG EXCERPT:
It was close to five o’clock and Viv wanted to go home. Winter hadn’t reached the Midwest yet, but from September through October the temperatures often dipped and dove sporadically, before diving for the long winter ahead. There’d been a slight chill in the air that morning and she hoped for a few more weeks of warmth before harsh weather moved in.
She looked forward to a hot soak in the bathtub, but Skittles was due for pick-up first. Connor had assured her he’d pick her up, or have his father get her before five. She glanced at her watch again. Four-fifty-six. She didn’t mind staying late if she needed to; it would be a shame to leave the nervous animal alone another night.
She opened the small closet to put the dust mop away.
“Hello.”
With a start, she spun and her hand caught the broom handle on her way around. Gasping, she grabbed uselessly, horrified as the cleaning tool flew sideways from the closet. In slow motion she saw it shoot out against Connor’s shoulder and fall with a sharp snap onto the tile floor.
“Oh! I’m so--so sorry! Are you hurt?” Instant heat rushed up her neck and she bent to reclaim the errant broom to shove into the closet. She slammed the door and leaned against it on a sharp breath.
“I’m fine. You worried your killer broom might attack again? You might consider putting a lock on the door,” he said with a crooked smile.
Puzzled, Viv looked around and realized with total humiliation how it appeared she’d trapped the broom inside the closet--when in actuality, she wanted to climb through the door beside the instrument and hide.
“Of course not. That would be silly. I didn’t expect you right now.”
“It’s two minutes of five. I told you I’d be here for Skittles. Is it too late?”
Right. The skunk. “No. I’m sure she’s more than ready to go home. Do you have the pet carrier to put her in?” She probably didn’t need to ask when Connor stood empty-handed before her.
He lowered his head and she knew he’d forgotten it, fought back a smile at his forgetfulness. “Sorry. I drove straight from work and didn’t think about it.”
“No worry. I have one you can borrow.” Which meant he’d have to see her again. She’d definitely need to see him again.
“Thank you. I’ll bring it back tomorrow.”
“Oh, there’s no rush. I keep a few on hand for emergencies.” She led him back to the cage where the skunk still huddled, and got a carrier while he opened the cage to retrieve his daughter’s pet. As he lifted the black fur ball out, Viv set a pink case next to him.
He hissed under his breath and almost let the animal loose. Viv opened the cage and held it upright for him to lower the skunk down inside and shut the door. Once he stood with the pet taxi, she detected a smear of red on one finger.
“She bit you?” Skunk bite, rabies, germs…
“It’s fine. When she’s scared she tends to nip a warning like a cat.” Connor’s lack of care concerned Viv, however.
“I should clean it with antiseptic before you go.”
“I’ll tend it when I get home.”
“But, it may have germs…get infected.”
“It’s not the first time, and her rabies vaccination is current. Thank you, but it’s not necessary.”
Viv stopped by a cabinet on the way to the front reception area to grab ointment and a Band-Aid.

Tarnished Gold By: Brita Addams

In 1915, starstruck Jack Abadie strikes out for the gilded streets of the most sinful town in the country—Hollywood. With him, he takes a secret that his country hometown would never understand.

After years of hard work and a chance invitation to a gay gentlemen's club, Jack is discovered. Soon, his talent, matinee idol good looks, and affable personality propel him to the height of stardom. But fame breeds distrust.

Meeting Wyatt Maitland turns Jack’s life upside down. He wants to be worthy of his good fortune, but old demons haunt him. Only through Wyatt's strength can Jack face that which keeps him from being the man he wants to be. Love without trust is empty.

As the 1920s roar, scandals rock the movie industry. Public tolerance of Hollywood's decadence has reached its limit. Under pressure to clean up its act, Jack’s studio issues an ultimatum. Either forsake the man he loves and remain a box office darling, or follow his heart and let his shining star fade to tarnished gold.

Jamie Marchant - The Goddess's Choice

Welcome Jamie,

Jamie is here today to talk about her latest book  The Goddess's Choice

The crown princess Samantha fears she’s mad; no one but she sees colors glowing around people. The peasant Robrek Angusstamm believes he’s a demon; animals speak to him, and his healing powers far outstrip those of his village’s priests. Despite their fears, their combined powers make them the goddess’s choice to rule the kingdom of Korthlundia.

In my sword and sorcery novel, The Goddess’s Choice, Samantha’s ability enables her to discern a person’s character through their multi-colored aura, and Robrek’s makes him the strongest healer the kingdom has seen in centuries. But their gifts also endanger their lives. Royals scheme to usurp the throne by marrying or killing Samantha, and priests plot to burn Robrek at the stake. Robrek escapes the priests only to be captured by Samantha’s arch-enemy, Duke Argblutal; Argblutal intends to force the princess to marry him by exploiting Robrek’s powers. To save their own lives and stop the realm from sinking into civil war, Robrek and Samantha must consolidate their powers and unite the people behind them.

The Goddess’s Choice  is based on a Norwegian fairy tale, “The Princess and the Glass Hill.” Though my favorite fairy tale as a child, it disturbed me that the female character has no name and no role other than being handed off as a prize. My novel remakes the crown princess of Korthlundia into a strong heroine who is every bit as likely to be the rescuer as the one rescued.

Gilli Allan- Life Class

LIFE CLASS

Life hasn’t lived up to their expectations. Love has let them down. But art has
brought them together. And it’s never too late to learn lessons.

Four very different individuals meet once a week to draw the human figure. They each come to realise that it’s not just the naked model they need to examine and understand. They all have to secrets they hide from the world and from themselves. They each need to uncover and confront the past before they can make sense of the present and, ultimately, navigate a new path into the future.

Dory says she “works in the sex trade - the clean-up end”. She deals with the damage sex can cause. Her job has given her a jaundiced view of men, an attitude confirmed by the disintegration of her own relationship. Now that she needs to make a fresh start love doesn’t figure in her plans.

Stefan is a single-minded sculptor who can’t make a living from his art. To make ends meet he finds himself facing a class of adults who want their old teacher back. Love is an emotion he long ago shut off, but it creeps up from more than one direction. Is it time to admit that letting people into his life is not defeat?

Fran is a wife and stay-at-home mother on a collision course with her mid-life crisis. She craves the romance of her youth. An on-line flirtation becomes scarily obsessive, putting everything she really loves at risk.

Dominic is a damaged child, he knows all about sex but nothing about love. He has been given a different vision of the future but his lifestyle still holds a dangerous allure. By grasping the help and love that’s on offer he has the chance to transform his life.

Meet Gilli Allan

Author Bio:

I was born and brought up in Kent, in the South East of England. Influenced by my teenage
sister, who had decided to write a regency romance, I began my own novel when I was ten.
It was a hobby I continued to pursue throughout my own teenage years. Writing was only
abandoned when I left home and real life took over from the fiction.

I did not go to Oxford or Cambridge. Instead, after leaving school at sixteen with just enough
in the way of qualifications to get in, I went to Croydon Art College, in south London.

I did not work on any of the quality newspapers, in television or publishing, but did a variety
of jobs - shop assistant, beauty-consultant and barmaid. I also had a job which consisted
of picking up American tourists and sending them on a free guided-tour of London which
culminated in lunch at the Hilton. The unsuspecting tourists were then subjected to an
intense sales-pitch, selling Florida real estate. I was no good at this ‘commission only’ job
and, unsurprisingly, didn’t enjoy it. I was very relieved when I eventually landed the job of
my dreams, working as an illustrator with an advertising design studio. I eventually went
free-lance.

I married and resumed writing while my son, Tom, was a toddler. My first two completed
novels, Just Before Dawn and Desires & Dreams, were immediately taken on by a new,
small publisher. But my publisher failed to achieve the required marketing push and wide
distribution which would have given its authors, and itself, any real prospect of success.
Though they were available in libraries, I never saw my novels in any book shop, other than
in my home town. The publisher ceased to trade within a few years.

I have continued to write what I have always written - unconventional, subversive and
surprising stories, which never follow the current band-wagon. Although my books -
contemporary women’s romantic fiction - always have a love story at their core, they DO
NOT have predictable, join-the-dots-plots. But I have failed to find a new mainstream
publisher and decided to go independent, publishing TORN and then LIFE CLASS, first as
eBooks and subsequently in paperback. Later this year I propose to publish my book, FLY
or FALL.

Still a keen artist I design my own covers. I also draw and paint, design Christmas cards,
and regularly attend a weekly art class. I’ve been a school governor, a contributor to local
newspapers and was one of the initiators of the successful community shop in my village.

Author Katya Armock

I want to welcome Katya Armock today.
Katya is here to talk about her new book To Hiss or to Kiss

Blurb:
Chloe can “talk” to animals…so why can she hear the thoughts of this hot, green-eyed man?

Abandoned by her mother and raised by a father who’d given up on life, Chloe doesn't let anyone get close. Lucky for her, she can communicate with animals—telepathically. Animals are the only people she needs. When a suspected dog-fighting ring comes to her attention, Chloe decides to do a little spying. In her rush to win the dogs’ trust, she almost gets caught.

Until a sexy stranger intervenes, and she finds she can overhear his thoughts. She’s never been able to hear people, and this man’s about as sexy as she’s ever seen. It’s more than intellectual curiosity that drives her to discover his secret: he’s a jaguar shape-shifter, and the presence of this cat among the dogs might be a bit too much to handle. But the animal attraction is just too hot to resist, and the passion between them makes both the sparks—and the fur—fly…

Here is also an Interview with Chloe and Katya

Katya: I know how much you hate beating around the bush, so I’m just going to dive right in. What makes you unique?
Chloe: [gives me an are-you-stupid look] That’s obvious. I can telepathically communicate with animals.
Katya: OK, I’ll give you that, but what else makes you unique?
Chloe:  I like ice cream.
Katya: You’re not really trying, are you?
Chloe: How can you tell? [rolls her eyes] Look, I just don’t like talking about myself. Can’t we just talk about my cats or something?
Katya: How about something close to that? You spend a lot of time volunteering at an animal shelter. Given your ability, it makes sense, but it must be difficult to deal with all the homeless animals.
Chloe: It is, but I figure I was given this gift for a reason and I need to do what I can to help animals. They don’t have a voice for most people. Plus, animals are way better than people. If I wanted to be harshly judged, I’d tell more people about my ability—or wear a bikini or something.
[We both laugh.]
Katya:  I figure you’ll have a unique take on this one, considering your ability to converse with animals. What animal would you be?
Chloe: A cat. I’ve always been a cat person. [smiles wickedly] Jorge certainly hasn’t changed that. Do you know how hot it is to have man purr against your naked body whether you’re cuddling or fuc…? [blushes]
Katya: I can imagine. Speaking of Jorge, what’s it like to be able to telepathically communicate with a person?
Chloe: At first it freaked me out. I didn’t even know shape-shifters existed, so I thought I could just suddenly hear a random human in my head. It didn’t help that just looking at him sent my libido into overdrive. [blushes again and mutters under her breath] Goddamn, capillaries.
Katya: [tries not to show amusement] Moving on… What is your most prized possession?
Chloe: Is it bad if I call Jorge my possession? It’s not like I’m objectifying him or anything, but he’s the best thing in my life.

Excerpt:
“I’m not going to hurt you.” His whisper tickles my ear, his breath warm against my neck.
The voice sounds familiar, but I can’t place it. I shiver.
“But you aren’t safe here. There are cameras around the house.”
My mind whirls, trying to figure out what to do. My body is still frozen with panic.
His hold on me tightens. “I am going to back us out of here, and then we can talk.” He starts to pull me farther into the shadows behind the barn, and something clicks in my brain. I go limp to make it harder for him to carry me. The man doesn’t even lose a beat taking on more weight. He chuckles softly.
That just makes me mad and I start thrashing my newly unencumbered legs, trying my best to get his shin or twist my foot up higher to his groin, but he quickly grabs my legs with one arm, negating my struggle. He’s now got me almost sideways across his body to keep one hand over my mouth and the other clamped around my thighs like a vise, but I keep writhing—or at least trying to writhe. I kick back from my knees, but my heels just connect with air. Too bad I’m not insanely flexible. To my still panicking mind, it just seems silly to stop at this point, though.
“I’m trying to help you. If you insist on this thrashing I will be forced to immobilize you further so the noise doesn’t alert anyone.”
I wonder how he would do that and imagine this man’s bulk holding me down on the ground. It’s not a wholly unwelcome thought, which is all kinds of fucked up. My hormones seriously need a good talking to. I redouble my writhing, part of me wanting to know if and how he’ll carry out his threat. The rational part of me rolls her eyes.
I wiggle my upper leg free enough that I get a pretty good whap against the outside of his hip, and I hear a soft whumpf of pain from him.
“That’s it.” He drops me to the ground on my back and then repositions himself over me, recovering my mouth with one hand while trapping my legs with his before I can even think about screaming.
When I recover from the shock, I’m in for a new one. My eyes widen as I make contact with emerald green eyes that are startlingly familiar.

Author Bio:
I like books that are funny and fun to read (and hot!) but also make me think or look at the world in a new way. I am influenced by magic realism, comparative mythology, and esoteric spiritual practices from around the world.
I spent too many years chasing someone else’s definition of success. My life simplified, I returned to my first love of writing.
These days you’ll find me writing, pet sitting, juggling a number of freelance gigs, and reigning as my home’s domestic goddess. I live in the Midwestern U.S. with my husband, dog and cats. Alas, I have, as of yet, been unable to teach my husband how to purr.

Working Hard

There are so many things that are happening right now.  Bounty's End is out on ebook. Check out  http://ajwiliams.com for details on where to buy Bounty for Hunter and Bounty's End.

Book 3 tentatively titled Bounty for Her Love, I hope to have out late May possibly early June. Then it will be time to finish Book 4 which is tentatively titled A Bounty Homecoming.   Which book 4 will be out late September mid-October.

Also in the works is a new series. It is a paranormal romance I am also plotting out another book however I have not yet decided if it will be a series or a stand alone. Nonetheless that book is a contemporary romance.

Lots of things to come. Super excited
